Punathambekar, “Between Rowdies & Rasikas: Rethinking Fan Activity in Indian Film Culture”

August 17, 2008

Okay, I confess: I had to look up “Bollywood” on dictionary.com to find out that it’s the Indian film industry. Who knew? What kind of word is “bollywood” anyway? On a more serious note, the fans of Indian film seem much more like fan-atics than most fans here. What makes a person so obsessive and so willing to act out? Is it the desire for attention? In this context, the divide is wide between fan-atics and connoisseurs. Again, the superior attitude (but also the ability to maintain one’s decorum, at least in public!).
