McKee, “The Fans of Cultural Theory”

August 17, 2008

Did I mention my minor in philosophy? I LOVE theory (does that make me a fan?). But I love theory because it challenges my ACTIVITY, and the problem with philosophy is that it is philosophical and not (dare I say it?) practical…unless you put it into practice. Anyway, I like the idea that academia be challenged as much as academics challenge popular culture. McKee concludes, “We Theory fans work with passion, uncomfortably situated within commodified capitalist systems” (97). Thus, we’re all in the same boat; we’re all fans of something, whether it’s “cool” or “serious” or “geeky.” More material for building those bridges?
