Couldry, “On the Set of The Sopranos: ‘Inside’ a Fan’s Construction of Nearness”

August 17, 2008

Again, hard to engage personally with a show I’ve never seen.  But one line struck me: Couldry paraphrases Sandvoss’s argument “that our psychological investments in narrative commodities are an essential part of how we are entrenched within capitalism’s order” (147).  Once again, our identities are bound up with the economy of our culture.  Later on, one author writes how strange it is that we should be frustrated with the commercialization of television yet do nothing to change that fact.  We cannot pull ourselves out of society because it shapes and defines us in a highly invested way.  Which is why being Christian in a more-than-nominal way comes out as what Shane Claiborne calls being an “ordinary radical.”
