Week 3 Wednesday

October 10, 2007

I was really surprised today in class to consider that our concept of mathematics as universal is actually faulty. It’s caused me to reconsider a lot of my presuppositions about what is universal across cultural contexts. I think everyone can interpret a smile and a frown the same way, but beyond that we are so defined by our cultural understandings from music to body image to humor. All the more important for people to be challenged to visit other parts of the world and become aware of different cultures and worldviews in order to put their own into global perspective.
