Week 2 – “Colonialism and the Desiring Machine” Young

October 7, 2007

Young builds on Bhabha’s idea of the necessity of understanding one’s own cultural lens, understanding how much of our idea of the “west” is rooted in the misconceptions of colonialism. Young echoes this necessity. He calls for a “‘critical ethnography of the West'” (77) but does not really suggest a mode of operation for that purpose. How exactly are we to set aside our own blind spots and see ourselves objectively when we clearly need this objectivity because we cannot see the marginalized appropriately?
