Week 2 Monday

October 2, 2007

I was really impacted by two points Gandhi made in the video today. He said, “Through our pain we will make them see their injustice,” and “Even if the minority is only one, truth is truth.” Gandhi’s advocation for non-violent active resistance proves the fallacy of Fanon’s conclusion in the first Castle article. Fanon writes, “Violence alone, violence committed by the people, violence organized and educated by its leaders, makes it possible for the masses to understand social truths and gives the key [to freedom] to them” (25). Better, resistance–and that non-violent–is the key to freedom from any kind of oppression. Like Gandhi said, truth is truth. It’s the education of the masses, and that education in action, that brings about change. Violence…that’s just a waste of precious human life.
